The Man Who Sold Himself is the third album from the collaboration between Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison and 05Ric, the multi-instrumentalist, singer and extended range bass player. The album will be released on Kscope on February 27th 2012 as a 2 disc set, featuring the album on CD as well as a 5.1 mix on DVD, allowing fans to enjoy the intricate complexities of the album in full surround glory.

In addition to being voted best Progressive Drummer four years in a row in the Modern Drummer Magazine’s readers poll. He was also recently invited to perform on the David Letterman show as part of his Drum Solo week (see below).

Best known for his work with Porcupine Tree, Gavin has also played extensively with King Crimson as well as providing session drumming for a host of respected artists but his work with 05Ric has allowed him to develop some of the work that he has created outside these projects.

05Ric uses his voice, extended range bass and guitars to turn his love of sound into sonic tapestries. His vocals, virtuoso playing and a chance meeting between the two has led to one of the most interesting and complex musical collaborations in recent years.

The union of 05Ric’s distinctive style with Gavin’s extraordinary drumming has already produced some unique results but Gavin has stated that with The Man Who Sold Himself‘we have continued to push the boundaries of our rhythmic and harmonic possibilities, I believe these are some of the wildest rhythmic concepts that I have ever conjured and 05Ric has snaked his bass around.’

05Ric goes on to explain that lyrically the album deals with themes “based on the greed of the financial global crisis, the empty shallowness of goal seeking without passion or for its own sake and the destructive force left behind by selfish behaviour – but the central character through heightened awareness and right action discovers his true calling.”

The album, which was written over the last two years and recorded in mid-2011, is the duo’s first release since Circles in 2009. Circles was described by Classic Rock Prog as ‘bristling with instrumental technique and firepower… it is peppered with a pulsating, muscular funk that pushes through generic barriers to create its own unique space.’

Steve Hogarth & Richard Barbieri – Not The Weapon But The Hand (2012)

Kscope is pleased to announce the release of Not The Weapon But The Hand, the new album from Steve Hogarth and Richard Barbieri. The album will be available from February 27th 2012.

Hogarth is best known as the frontman of Marillion, the progressive rock legends that he joined in 1989, following spells in The Europeans and How We Live. In addition to the 12 studio albumsMarillion have released in this time, he has also recorded and toured as a solo artist, under the moniker H.

In recent years Richard Barbieri has been a core member ofPorcupine Tree playing keyboards on all the band’s albums since 1993 as well as releasing two solo albums, Things Buried andStranger Inside. Prior to this, it was in the new-wave pioneers Japanthat he originally came to prominence, helping to create the groundbreaking synthesiser sound that defined the band and influenced the likes of The Human League, Duran Duran, Gary Numan, Talk Talk, Kate Bush and a whole raft of other artists, including Hogarth.

The band also influenced Hogarth, at that point playing keyboards in The Europeans; ‘when I was in my mid-twenties Japan’s ‘Tin Drum’ album was a firm favourite and truly a groundbreaking work… Japan were one of those rare bands where each musician seemed to have reinvented his instrument overnight. Central to this sound was the unmistakable synthesiser programming/playing of my, now, chum Mr B.’

LANDMARQ – ENTERTAINING ANGELS [LIMITED EDITION] (2012)

Landmarq are a UK-based neo-progressive rock band. Since forming in 1990, they have so far released six albums, two of which were recorded live at various concerts in the UK and elsewhere inEurope.

Initially signing to a Dutch record company, SI Records, then forming their own label, Synergy Records, the band have established themselves within the world of progressive rock, though their style may also extend into album-oriented rockmelodic rockhard rock and even a slightly jazz edge.

Vocalist Damian Wilson left the band after three very well received albums to concentrate on his solo career and the band found a replacement in Ian ‘Moon’ Gould. ‘Moon’ spent a year with the band, playing various gigs in the UK and Holland, before deciding to move on. It was at this point that Landmarq decided to go for a radical change to their sound and recruited the long-time friend of the band, Tracy Hitchings, who formally sang with Quasar and did their first vinyl album, “The Lorelei” and has done two albums with Clive Nolan’s Strangers on a Train – The Key Part I and The Key Part II and has done a solo album with Mr. Nolan called From Ignorance to Ecstasy and before joining Landmarq she had done sessions with the likes of Steve Hackett (Genesis), Nik Turner (Hawkwind) and a tour with John Wetton (Asia/King Crimson) and has worked with Rick and Oliver Wakeman (Yes), Clive Nolan, and Bob Catley (Magnum) on Jabberwocky and on Nolan/Wakeman’s Hound of the Baskervilles, which also featured English actor Robert Powell, who narrated the album.

Landmarq have played concerts in the UK, Holland, Germany, Belgium, France, Poland, Italy, the US and Mexico; both as support and as headliners at various festivals and music venues. The band have worked with many well-known artists including MarillionJohn WettonSteve HackettHugh McDowellNik Turner (Hawkwind), Annie Haslam (Renaissance), IQPendragonArena and Suzi Quatro.

Kory Clarke – Opium Hotel II (2011)

One of Kory Clarke’s paintings featured in the artwork on this here cd is a 5×3 canvas of the Union Jack with the slogan ‘God Shag The Queen’ emblazoned across it. That’s how punk rock he is and how much he doesn’t give a fuck what anyone thinks. Always passionate and controversial whether it be his music, his art or his political views the Warrior Soul frontman has never been one to stand in the shadows, preferring to shout from the highest point to anyone who will listen.

‘Opium Hotel II’ is a collaboration with some of Kory’s friends and artists such as Gary Hood who wrote the fantastic title track from the first ‘Opium Hotel’ album. He also wrote and played guitar here on the similar ‘Masquerade Party’ a simple, almost desolate sounding acoustic track that puts across a feeling of loneliness, it stands apart from the rest as did ‘Opium Hotel’ on the original.

‘Opium Hotel II’ like its predecessor is an outlet for all the stuff that doesn’t fit in the Warrior Soul shaped hole, more experimental and arty. Lyrically he is still spitting at the USA and the government, that will never change until they make him president I reckon.

The album opens with ‘A Message From Mr. Harris’ a Government public announcement tape about recognising the early warning signs of drug dependancy, this segues into ‘Best Birthday Ever’ the first of several of his trademark spoken word pieces, this one shows the more gentle side of Kory’s lyrics

First song proper ‘America’s New Cunt’ is a verbal tirade describing Corporate America as a 200 year old bikini wearing slut,”Who’s the new slut, America’s new cunt” is the refrain, guaranteeing Kory no new friends in the government, not that he would want any! It ends with a “come on…CUNT” – who else can get away with stuff like that?

‘Kiss On This’ harks back to ‘Space Age Playboys’ era Warrior Soul; a fantastic slice of sleazy, punk rock it’s fast and furious – I can listen to stuff like this all day. Lucky for me there is more of the same in the shape of ‘Super Drug’; incidentally Kory plays the drums on both these tracks. ‘Junky Stripper’ is a dumb ass rock song, with a Rob Zombie like vibe, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Of the spoken word material ‘I’m Your Pilot’ stands out, with trippy beats as his back up Kory takes the helm and addresses his passengers – take his trip over Manhattan if you dare; let’s just say it’s an unnerving, bumpy ride.

The atmospheric and acoustic driven ‘It’s My Time’, with its short and sweet twin guitar solo, and the tripped out ‘Painting Space Ships’, are more like vintage Warrior Soul to me. The only oddity that doesn’t really do it for me at this early stage of listening is ‘Paradigm’, but only time will tell.

The production varies from track to track but it doesn’t feel disjointed, it’s a departure from the Warrior Soul albums for sure. An interesting collection of material; I guess it’s a snapshot in a year of the life of Kory Clarke, and one that is well worth exploring.

On the cover of this cd it says “Parental Advisory: This Recording Contains Art” – a subtle dig at the powers that be and freedom of speech, it sure does contain art in many forms. Fans of Kory Clarke will love it as will fans of Warrior Soul, many others may scratch their heads and say “what the fuck?”…job done I believe.

Bullet Train Blast – Nothing Remains (2012)

Energetic, powerfull and fresh killer rock with big danish balls of dynamite that explodes in the ear canals, was my first impression and feeling when I listened to BTB’s album “Nothing Reamains”. They do it with a great dose of attitude and the tight sound is close to knock me out. Martin Larsen on vocals sounds like he is a younger brother of Jesper Binzer in D-A-D.

Easy listening, high tempo and straight forward rock with nice peaks there Niels Hyttel plays some heavy riffs and solos and in my ears does the hard hitting drummer Simon Brøchner make the biggest difference compared to related artists. I’ve got a hard time to pick any favourite tracks, because they have really put up 10 mega hard songs and the guys should be commended for that.

Every minute of the album is filled with great melodies, nice tempo changes, hard rock guitars and tight wheezy delicious rock vocals. The production is perfect and the sound is pure as spring water with whisky on a Friday night. My mind fills with energy and positive feelings when I listen to “Nothing Remains” and that’s the spirit and what it’s all about with rock music!

BTB is a band to keep in mind for the metal festival booking staffs across Europe, this is a coming band with both ambitions and talent to be another big danish music export, just like Volbeat, Royal Hunt and D-A-D. Thumbs up!

Bullet Train Blast is: Martin Larsen – Vocals, Niels Hyttel – Lead Guitar, Steff Gunn – Guitar, Morten Olesen – Bass and Simon Brøchner on drums.

Lana Lane – El Dorado Hotel (2012)

The iconic symphonic rock vocalist returns after a 4-year hiatus.

After a four-year break since her last album, Lana Lane is back with her most powerful release to date, “El Dorado Hotel.” The veteran symphonic rock diva delivers a 10-song tour-de-force of finely crafted original tracks in an audiophile production by husband/keyboardist, Erik Norlander. “El Dorado Hotel” hosts Lane’s usual broad spectrum of musical styles and genres with a cohesiveness that fans of the artist will recognize instantly. The opener, “A Dream Full of Fire,” is a new Lana Lane classic that blurs the line between prog metal and jazz stylings in a mélange that only she can deliver. “Maybe We’ll Meet Again” is a European-styled melodic AOR radio anthem blending classic rock with modern sensibilities. The song, “El Dorado,” is a Lana Lane epic with a soaring chorus reminiscent of her classic, “Queen of Ocean.” The robust “Darkness Falls” introduces an Irish folk style combined with a gothic metal element with its haunting choral vocals and arena-crafted chorus. Then “Hotels” is an acoustic track that evokes jazz standards like “Autumn Leaves.” The tracks, “Believe,” “Life of the Party,” “Gone Are The Days” and “Moon God” add further threads to the “El Dorado Hotel” tapestry. The album closes with the 11-1/2 minute opus, “In Exile” that producer Erik Norlander describes as a “vintage progressive rock epic.”

The musicians of “El Dorado Hotel” are a top-notch group of artists including both new and familiar faces. Lane says about the musicians, “Both Freddy DeMarco and Mark Matthews did some fantastic work on Erik’s solo project, “The Galactic Collective”. I then had the opportunity to play with them both during some live appearances in 2011 when I sang with the band. After having played with the guys and getting to know them, I knew that I wanted them to be a part of this project as well. Then for John Payne, Jay Schellen, Guthrie Govan and Bruce Bouillet (ex-Racer X), as you know, Erik been has playing with John Payne for about 5 years now. When the original 1982 lineup of ASIA reformed a few years back, John Payne formed his own separate band to continue all the work that he had done with ASIA during his 14-year run and many albums with them. So John and Erik tour as “ASIA Featuring John Payne,” and they’ve probably played over a hundred shows together.

Jay is the drummer in the band, and both Guthrie and Bruce have been the guitarists. Bruce is working with them currently. I of course go to a lot of their shows and have become friends with all of them. It is a great group of people, and they are all very talented musicians. Since we see them so much and Erik plays with them constantly, it was only natural to work with them on this album. And then finally for Mark McCrite, Neil Citron and Don Schiff, all three of them have been on so many Lana Lane albums going all the back to my very first album in 1995. It’s great to continue working with them through all these years.”

Songs for El Dorado Hotel were written by Lana Lane, Erik Norlander and longtime collaborator, Mark McCrite, who comments, “My favorite songs on the album are ‘El Dorado’ (with the fantastic Spanish guitar) and ‘A Dream Full of Fire’ – that’s a really killer ‘classic’ Lana Lane track.” You can hear those two songs from the album in their entirety at the Think Tank Media web site: www.thetank.com/lledh.htm

Unisonic – Ignition (2012) EP

UNISONIC, the new band featuring former HELLOWEEN vocalist Michael Kiske and Kai Hansen (GAMMA RAY, ex-HELLOWEEN) alongside Dennis Ward (bass) and Kosta Zafiriou (drums) of Germany’s PINK CREAM 69and Swiss guitarist Mandy Meyer (who has previously played with ASIA,GOTTHARD and KROKUS), will release its debut EP, “Ignition” in late January via earMUSIC/Edel. The effort will include the track “Unisonic”plus one demo song and a cover version of the HELLOWEEN classic “I Want Out”, recorded live on October 15 at this year’s edition of the Loud Park festival at Saitama Super Arena, a multi-purpose indoor arena located in Saitama City, Japan.

The “Ignition” cover artwork can be seen below. Also available is a stream of the song “Unisonic”.

A full-length UNISONIC album will be made available in March.

Zafiriou previously stated about the band’s decision to sign withearMUSIC/Edel: “We had several promising labels being interested inUNISONIC, but the enthusiasm of Max Vaccaro and his team convinced us that earMUSIC is the right company for us.”

After the addition of Hansen to the group’s lineup in early 2011,UNISONIC continued the songwriting process for its debut release, incorporating Kai‘s talent for writing great anthemic rock songs into its existing material. The recordings for the album started at end of September at ICP studios in Brussels, Belgium.

UNISONIC‘s music is very versatile and shows a broad approach to heavy rock without sacrificing the power and strong, catchy melodies that characterized the bandmembers’ previous projects.

Commented Kiske: “It feels great to finally bring the band to the studio and record the songs we’ve been working on. We took our time to grow as a band, but it was definitely worth it and we are very proud of the result.”

Added bassist/producer Ward: “We have a bunch of very strong songs and can’t wait until people can hear them. Everyone in the band is now looking even more positive into the future.”

Regarding Hansen‘s addition to UNISONICKiske previously said, “After so many years of abstinence, I had a lot of fun doing my first live shows with UNISONIC in summer 2010, so I agreed to do the short world tour with AVANTASIA. It was a great experience to be on stage with all those great artists, but with Kai it was something different: We instantly felt the magic again and had a lot of fun together on and off stage. We both realized that we want to be together in band again. He was interested in the open musical concept of UNISONIC and finally asked me if he can join the band. I talked to my bandmates and they all felt great about it. His talent as a guitarist and songwriter is an enrichment for the band and we are looking forward to his contribution for the music of UNISONIC.”

Kai Hansen‘s position in GAMMA RAY will be unaffected by his involvement with UNISONIC.
