Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – Kiss My Amps (2011)

In the middle of his 2010 concerts, Tom Petty interrupted the hits for a stretch of electric R&B and psychedelic jangle from his rebirth record, Mojo. This vinyl LP, issued for Record Store Day, is a crackling facsimile of the minisets inside those shows, including the tough freestyle strut “Takin’ My Time,” the hard-blues-and-rave-up combo “I Should Have Known It” and the Allman Brothers-with-acid waltz “First Flash of Freedom.” There is one non-Mojo nugget: a 1999 B side, “Sweet William,” which suggests Bob Dylan‘s “Ballad of a Thin Man” juiced with the garage-rock helter-skelter of Count Five’s 1966 hit “Psychotic Reaction.”

Raven Quinn is a 26 year old singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles, CA. Quinn’s self-titled debut album was released digitally worldwide on her birthday, March 4th 2010 via all major digital music retailers (iTunes World Wide, MySpace Music, Rhapsody, Napster, eMusic, IMVU, Amazon/ Amazon UK, Lala, Shockhound, Amazon On Demand, LimeWire Store, Nokia, Zune). Due to overwhelming support from an ever growing legion of followers, Quinn’s debut skyrocketed to the number one position on Amazon’s “Movers and Shakers” chart- which charts Amazon’s fastest selling digital albums- and also held top 100 chart positions in Rock and MP3 albums in general, all within the first twelve hours of release. The success proved to be an unexpected victory and incredible birthday gift for the self-released indie artist.

The songs which appear on the disc, penned by Quinn and Juno Award winning producer & engineer Dan Brodbeck, range from dark and brooding goth rock tracks to light, ethereal, and angelic ballads. The album takes the listener on a very personal journey through Quinn’s psyche and vividly illustrates the darkness and light that each of us experience in life and that we all harbor within ourselves, while featuring the enormous instrumental talents of some of Quinn’s own childhood heroes: George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob, Souls of We) and Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, Poe).

Quinn and Brodbeck were first introduced by close mutual friend and fellow artist/musician Dolores O’Riordan (The Cranberries) and the pairing proved to be quite a musical match, resulting in a continued creative connection. Since completion of Quinn’s debut, Brodbeck has resumed his role as producer and engineer for Quinn’s soon-to-be-released track “Catalyst” which was written and recorded for campaign use for Rover 4G -a high profile wireless internet provider. A music video for “Catalyst” is currently in pre-production and will be Quinn’s very first.

Legendary music trade Hits Magazine has praised Quinn for bringing “an edge to the singer/songwriter genre”, dubbed her a “rock goddess” and states that she is “an artist to watch in ’09/10.” Other recent accomplishments also include Quinn’s inclusion on the 2011 Grammy Award Ballot across multiple categories, the addition of three of her tracks (The Window, Decadence, and Catalyst) to Rock Band Network, and an artist sponsorship with Daisy Rock Guitars.

Glyder – Backroads to Byzantium (2011)

Glyder were formed back in 2004 and hail from County Wicklow in Ireland.
With 3 albums under their belt, the band have established quite a little reputation on the live circuit from touring constantly with various world renowned artists such as Thunder, DIO, Gotthard, Y&T.
“Back Roads To Byzantium” is their fourth release after the band reformed earlier this year with three new members.

This new line-up all in their 20’s has added a new fire to Glyder.
New singer Jackie Robinson has a classy rock voice that sometimes hints at Paul Rodgers and Phil Mogg, full of warmth whilst still having the power to make you sit up and take notice. New drummer Des McEvoy and bassist Graham McClatchie have formed a formidable partnership, being both able to pound out some killer rhythms, as well as bringing a huge amount of emotion and feel to the music.
Often compared in the past to Thin Lizzy thanks to duel guitar riffage of founder members Bat Kinane & Pete Fisher, the band has now broaden their musical horizons with the new album.
Glyder are still operating close to the classic rock sound that has made them one of the most invigorating bands of the last decade, but this time they have also added elements of hard and even melodic rock resulting in a more mature and rounded end product.

From the start, you’ll find that the band retains their Classic Rock roots, but with a touch of hard rock heaviness, as on the opener “Chronicled Deceit”.
Yet, on the follower “Long Gone”, a fast-paced rocker, Glyder tones things down for a more melodic rock, even AOR, sound.
Strong melodies, a superb rock groove, and playful and catchy hooks propel the songs “Fade To Dust” and ‘Don’t Make Their Mistakes’, featuring strong guitar solos and indepth songwriting.
“Down And Out” has a plaintive guitar and atmospheric bass line, while the uptempo next track, the bluesy swagger of “Something She Knows”, shows how the band have grown, with an accessible chorus and hook laden guitar motif giving this song a commercial tinge previously unheard in the Glyder cannon.
That’s evident too on the pure radio friendliness and accessibility found on “Even If I Don’t Know Where I’m Gonna Go”.
New vocalist Jackie Robinson proves his talent and finesse on the acoustic driven closer “Motions Of Time”.

Glyder are back in great form. “Backroads To Byzantium” sees the band delivering a Classic Rock album with an impressive sound plenty of verve, harmony and energy that instantly command attention.
The entirety of this recording is bolstered by solid song composition and skilled musicianship, with great melodic guitars, a terrific rhythm section (I love the cymbals sound here) and a classy vocalist.
This album has been crafted with attention and care in a manner that makes it familiar yet challenging and friendly yet fierce.
“Backroads To Byzantium” is the most pure Classic Rock disc heard in years, definitely one I’ll be replaying time and time again.

Innovative, compelling and unique! Van Canto’s fourth album once again confirms that guitars are not necessary to deliver first-class metal. Break the Silence reflects the German sextet’s newfound confidence and experience. The band’s main focus centers around sweeping original compositions, in which the vocal acrobats only enlist the help of the drums. Break the Silence captivates with strong songwriting and a novel implementation. A cappella metal! Metal like no other!

GABE DIXON – ONE SPARK 2011

One Spark is set to release on the 23rd of August as the debut solo album from Gabe Dixon. Somewhat prolific in his career, he formed The Gabe Dixon Band, a quartet at the time, from Miami, in 1998 and has since went on to play for some time with Paul McCarneys band. In late 2010 he was then drafted to play with Supertramp, the British rock band who formed at the end of the 60s.

In producing this solo debut Gabe recruited several credible artists, writers and producers to collaborate with him including songwriter Tia Sillers, country/bluegrass icon Alison Krauss for ‘Even The Rain’ and Grammy Award winner Dan Wilson on “My Favorite”. An impressive entourage and degree of experience indeed, one which would theoretically suggest this debut solo album would reflect such experience. But this is not the case.

‘One Spark’ is Gabe’s attempt at mature piano-pop, a genre populated with heavy-weight contenders like Elton John, The Beautiful South and Coldplay. Unlike anything from these heavy-weights, this record is pungent with teenage angst spilling into unbridled Cliché comprised almost entirely of one dimensional love songs causing each track flow into each other, giving the definition between tracks eminence only by a chintzy venture into reggae, clearly influenced by Sting and The Police, with ‘Running On Fumes’.

One Spark has been co-written with former members of Deacon Blue and Snow Patrol. The influence from which is palpable. The mono-tempo throughout and choruses long-drawn on holding the last note feel both outdated and exasperating.

The album opens, putting it’s best foot forward with “Strike”. The song sets the lyrical trend for the rest of the album where Gabe sings about “someone else”, each track throughout the record is about “you” and they all appear to say the same thing; “poor me, I love you”, but regardless of this solo dimensional rhetoric, it does slowly build up a picture of what Gabe Dixon himself is like.

Second song on the record ‘Even The Rain’ draws our expectations skyward towards a bluegrass vista being advertised as the duet with Alison Krauss. However, the song is more reminiscent of the unintelligible banality of hackneyed writing that fills love letters from teenagers; “even the rain is falling for you” …yes, yes and even the sun shines out of your ass, cringe!

Redemption to a small degree is made on the final track ‘Losing You’, redemption not because the album is coming to a close but Gabe extends to the listener some deserved versatility. ‘Losing You’ breaks the mold of the album with some up-tempo electric guitar, more prominent drumming and cartoon spaceship sound effects, that’s right, spaceship sound effects after the second chorus.

Musicianship is fair and mature but nothing especially challenging or original but some pleasant elements including a perky banjo walk throughout ‘I Can See You Shine’ that eventually becomes forgotten and suppressed by the lyrics.

Unimpressive throughout and completely lacks originality, possibly the result of the wide variety and amount of collaborators. Masses of collaboration often tend to draw music away from an edge towards the ‘middle-of-the-road’, hence, the music is left with elements of folk and pop, but not enough of either to be one or the other.
