Xander Demos is a high-energy rock and metal guitar player from Pittsburgh, PA. He currently fronts his own solo band, as well as playing lead guitar for Pittsburgh’s favorite party rock outfit, Into The Arena. Xander performs in excess of 100 times a year, and he is active in recording collaborations with artists all over the world. Xander plays guitars from Suhr, McNaught and Conklin, with whom he has endorsement deals. His endorsement from these guitar companies is a testament to his impressive skills and his deep commitment to playing the best guitars in the world.
Growing up in the decade of decadence, Xander has been a big fan of everything from pop-metal, Top-40, thrash metal, progressive rock and even dance-related music. As long as there was a hook or a melody, he picked up on it. Xander’s main influences are Shawn Lane, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Vinnie Moore, Jason Becker, Neal Schon, Michael Romeo and John Sykes.
Xander’s style ranges from the beautifully melodic to the jaw-droppingly insane. His playing encompasses much of what he has learned and absorbed from other players over the years. One constant in his music is a focus on strong guitar melodies. Xander is currently working on the full-length follow-up to his EP “Road To Guitarcadia,” which is being mixed by CJ Snare of Firehouse; an instructional DVD; performing with his two live bands every week; and passing on his passion for guitar by giving in person and online instructions to eager students.
Recently, Xander has been making quite the name for himself and his solo band by appearing as support for acts like UFO, Lizzy Borden, Kip Winger, Neil Zaza and Dio Disciples. He recently had the #1 Metal and Progressive music video on Myspace, with the photo montage clip of his song, “Chase the Sun.” It is the follow-up video to another #1–his current single, “Right Angles.” That single is receiving critical praise and worldwide acceptance by fans and radio, alike. Xander has recently been featured on The Real Radio Show with AJ Pero of Twisted Sister, Steve Vai’s GuitarTV.com, GuitarWorld.com, Hair Metal Mansion, Iron City Rocks, and many other top rock and metal shows and websites. Recently nominated for Best Guitarist, 2011 Iron City Rocks Music Awards, Xander’s music will also appear on two upcoming major compilation releases, Liberty N Justice’s “Cigar Chronicles” and Raging Storm Records’ “Night Of the Living Shred,” as well as the new Ged Ryland solo CD, due in early 2012. Xander also recently joined James Rivera’s Sabbath Judas Sabbath tribute band, which will tour on the east coast of the US this year.
In addition to these accomplishments, Xander is an avid animal lover. Always looking for projects that will aid these beautiful creatures, Xander donated a portion of his EP sales to various animal charities.
Xander plays: V-Picks, the Fractal Audio Axe-FX Ultra as well as Hughes and Kettner amps, ISP Guitar Systems and Suhr Guitars, Amps & Effects, McNaught Guitars, Conklin Guitars and John Dixon Cases. Many of Xander’s guitars are outfitted with EMG pickups and accessories. He exclusively uses the FloydUpgrades tremolos or the GraphTech LB-63 piezo-equipped Floyd tremolo.

Canadian composer and multi-instrumentalist RICK MILLER made his debut effort as a solo artist back in 1983 with the new age production Starsong, which shifted a highly respectable 30.000 units at the time. He would follow up this venture with Windhaven in 1987, and his efforts Interstellar Passage from 1998 and the EP No Passion, No Pain from 2009 would continue exploring similar musical territories.
But after honing his craft working at Sound Design Studios in Toronto throughout the 80’s and 90’s, Miller wanted to have a go at his true musical love as well, atmospheric progressive rock inspired by artists such as Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues and Steve Hackett.
This lead to a flurry of releases following the start of the millenium: The One (2003), Dreamtigers (2004), The End of Days (2006) and Angel of My Soul (2008). These efforts gave Miller a good reputation, and in 2009 he was signed by Canadian indie label Unicorn Records. His first release for this label was the 2009 effort Falling Through Rainbows.

I didn’t feel something close to a sheer heart attack, but at least I cheered for what went on in my ears for nearly forty plus minutes of listening. From the freezing and pale land of Finland, especially now at the cold winter time, I was introduced to SHEAR, a six piece band led by a female vocalist that surprised me, by the label of Lifeforce Records. I have to admit in an enclosed chapter that Lifeforce astonished me with their latest signings as the majority of their bands are bound to the extreme side of Metal while also connecting to modern Hardcore. SHEAR is an example of one of Lifeforce’s latest linked deals and this line-up is playing melodic modern Heavy / Power Metal. Following their newfound deal and a great production that they hired for the upcoming process, SHEAR released their debut album, “Breaking The Stillness”. If anyone had even the slightest though that is it going to sound like something out of the house of Liv Cristine, he or she is terribly erroneous.
With “Breaking The Stillness” I was once again evident to a different version of European Power Metal that shares no happiness but only a will to break the quietness and scream with unbound anger against deeds that were done to one’s self or to others dear with no justice. While most relying on swiftness and smoothness that might seem to be commercialized, I think that this album has a dark and interesting character. Attention-grabbing and flowing material like “The Stillness Wounded”, “Redemption Awaits”, “Stillness” and “Scorched”, presents a tight crew of hard knocking artists that wrote a well made heavy music with a wonderful atmospheric sensation that won’t let anyone close their eyes. The music is vigorous and above the common in the genre, heavy, thought-provoking, and yet cold blooded with a fine set of vocals by a great, not even close to be like an angel, female vocalist, named Alexa Leroux, that one day will become a star for sure. I will tell you again, it will only sound commercial, but SHEAR has a lot more to prove and to provide their positively growing fan base.
For me “Breaking The Stillness” was a sort of a build up that began to lower its blaze a little near its ending. What started as something mysterious became bold and powerful only to close the stage down with a decent vagueness and theatrical like drama. It wil

This German band has coined a catchy tag for their style of music: ProMeRo, which stands for Progressive Metal-Rock. It’s a memorable descriptor designed to announce their presence as a hybrid band that incorporate several different genres into their sound (besides progressive, metal, and rock, the group also mixes in modern rock, dabbles in death metal, and slips in some symphonic subtleties). Unfortunately, the acronymic tag is better than the actual music.
The press release claims Crow 7’s sound resembles “the good old rock of the ‘80s.” Yeah, well, McDonald’s can claim their Big Mac tastes like filet Mignon, but that don’t make it so. This album has as much in common with ‘80s rock as Paris Hilton has in common with a starving street urchin. What this album really sounds like is progressive rock slathered with the slick, beefy production so popular today peppered with some death metal growls to increase the intensity and up the modern metal appeal. Hard rock and power metal chops also come out to play once in awhile, but at its core this is modern prog with about as much interest in the ‘80s as the Pope has in exchanging his rosary beads for anal beads.
The musical mash-up Crow 7 attempted is laudable, even if it must be considered a failure. So many artists are content to cower in the comfort zone and crank out exactly the same thing as a thousand bands before them, so kudos to Crow 7 for having the guts to go against the grain and attempt something adventurous. The problem lies not with the innovative concept itself, but in the execution of that concept. While the members are all very skilled and the production is impeccable, there is an absence of energy and a hollow void where the hooks should be. With its tendency toward brooding seriousness, the progressive metal genre sometimes struggles to hold listener interest, and this is a struggle thatSymphony of Souls fails to overcome due to a scant supply of interesting songs.
But “scant” does not mean “absent.” Sift through the endless supply of tracks. Seriously, fifteen tracks is overkill—and you will uncover a handful of decent songs. “Street of Slaver” and “The Guide” both sport solid enough chorus hooks to make them stand out, though “solid” should not be confused with “good.” Sure, these songs are more listenable than the other dullards on the album, but that is damning with faint praise. Joining them in the “solid” category is “Dirty Lies,” a rocking mid-tempo number that avoids slavish commercialism by adding a progressive touch to the chorus as well as some growled backing vocals. “Breed of the Crime” brings some appreciable metal credibility to its sonic output despite the symphonic keys and violins accentuating the back of the mix, while “The Final Ride” brings a burst of double-kick adrenalin. Still, even if all these songs are awarded a passing grade, there are still ten songs remaining, and few people will be satisfied with that kind of lopsided ratio.
Symphony of Souls strives to be all things to all people and ends up satisfying none. Credit to the band for daring to do something different, but the cool idea is crippled by flawed execution and a disjointed approach to too many broad genres. The prog practitioners won’t appreciate the death metal dynamics. The hard rock crowd will be bored by the long songs and lack of catchy hooks. The heavy metal component doesn’t make an appearance often enough to satisfy the headbangers and the growled vocals do not offer enough compensation. And the symphonic elements are too much of an afterthought to impress that demographic. The band may describe themselves as ProMeRo, but a better phrase would be “jack of all trades, master of none.”

British heavy metal singer Blaze Bayley (WOLFSBANE, ex-IRON MAIDEN).
When asked about the recording process for his new album, “The King Of Metal”, Blaze said, “I don’t like to spend a lot of time in the studio, I don’t feel it’s a very creative environment. I like to spend most of my time on an album in the writing process and the composing. I feel that’s the bit that really counts. I’m always thinking of the audience, the fans and how I’m going to perform the songs live.”
When asked if he could offer any insight as to what the new album will sound like, Blaze said, “It’ll be a bit different to what I’ve done before because I’m producing it. There will be a lot of heavy metal, as you would expect from a Blaze Bayley album. We decided to have no rules; if we feel something is appropriate to sing or play, we will. It’s all about the vibe and passion. I’m very hopeful it will turn out to be my best work.”
You can listen to the entire interview using the SoundCloud player below.
Blaze has announced that he will be accompanied by the following musicians on his upcoming “King Of Metal” tour:
* Matteo “Lehmann” Grazzini (NEURASTHENIA) – Bass
* Claudio Tirincanti – Drums
* Andrea Neri (ASTARTE SYRIACA) – Guitar
* Thomas Zwijsen (NYLON MAIDEN) – Guitar
Bayley is currently at Fear Studio in Ravenna, Italy recording his new studio album, “The King Of Metal”, for a spring release. A European headlining tour in support of the CD will kick off in early March in Belgium.
In a recent interview with Metal Blast, Bayley stated about “The King of Metal”, “This album is a bit more back towards my classic metal style; it’s closer to the ‘Silicon Messiah’ and ‘Tenth Dimension’ albums. Although I didn’t plan it that way, this is how it has worked out. . . I’ve been working very closely with a young guitar player called Thomas Zwijsen, who has co-written most of the songs, and it has worked very well. Now, the title track, ‘The King Of Metal’, is dedicated to the fans, because they are the real kings of metal. Without the fans, there’s no heavy metal, and I think that people trivialize that and even disrespect heavy metal fans, compared to fans of pop or jazz. I’ve called the album ‘The King Of Metal’ as a tribute to heavy metal fans, thanks to whom it has been possible for me to have such a wonderful career and spend my life as a professional singer.”
Blaze last year parted ways with the rest of his band in order to pursue a career as a solo artist and the lead singer of WOLFSBANE. He explained the decision by saying that “the mental, financial and emotional strain of keeping the BLAZE BAYLEY band together has proven to be too much for me and has taken a terrible toll on my mental health. . . It has been an upsetting, frustrating and sad time because the BLAZE BAYLEY band will not be going on any more, but it is also for me a huge relief and a time to look forward.”

He grew up listening to the Beatles, but couldn’t help being influenced by the sounds of Memphis: Sun Studio, Beale Street, jazz, rock and blues. Just down the road from Beale and Sun is another musical landmark, Ardent Recording Studios.
Sound of the Broken was recorded at Ardent Studios and co-produced by Horn alongside James Joseph (Todd Agnew) and Curry Weber (Todd Agnew, Joy Whitlock).
Horn’s desire to serve through music has resulted in his role as the worship leader in his home church, Christ the Rock Community Church in Memphis, and an understanding of his calling.

The most important thing to know about The Trial – this remarkable, squalling, sneering, despairing riot of art rock – is that this is the proto-Warrior Soul. The place, for Kory Clarke, that it all truly began.
By the time Warrior Soul started swinging blows of timely warning from the shadows of New York City, Kory had abandoned his drum kit and was standing up front – all hair, raised fists and metallic street poetry. Nothing has changed. Those that truly supported him then truly support him now. But how many of those people are aware of The Trial, the origins of Warrior Soul and an important band and album in its own right? Even the most ardent fan probably only knows of The Trial by name, and fewer still will have ever heard their music.
That time has now ended, with the release of this extraordinary and pivotal album, a release that quite incredibly hails from 1983, not merely years before the rise of grunge and alternative metal, but even pre-dating the Hollywood hair metal era that that scene usurped. If you wanted any further evidence of Kory’s artistry and forward thinking, here it is.
Confrontational and steeped in reverb, The Trial’s music stalks the dark underground channels between the first Warrior Soul album and classic Killing Joke. “Where do I fit in?” roars Kory in 9th Grade, the start of a quest that continues today. Songs like this, the fiery New Rock and the deliciously cynical Human Beings, fight the fight for the underdog and the disenfranchised, the self-proclaimed losers that don’t fit. Drenched in psychedelic, seething guitars – a sound familiar to those who freaked out to Warrior Soul’s Trippin On Ecstasy – the canvas is colored in dark hues. It is propelled by Kory’s exhausting rhythmic barrage and, of course, his voice – a voice that sounds like the last voice at the end of the last bit of everything. Last decade, dead century anyone?
It’s impossible to listen to this decades-delayed work and not picture the doubtless head-fucking spectacle of the band playing live. Kory at the back, singing and playing drums simultaneously (no small achievement in itself!) but projected to the audience on big screens at the front. Footage interspersed with disturbing images of corpses, of porn and American TV advertisements. This already was an artist seeking to challenge people’s preconceptions, to disturb, probe and ask questions. The wicked riffs and anti-establishmentarianism that pummels “Ruler” along is yet another sign of things to come. The skittering guitars and shout-out-loud hooks of “Skeleton Dance” follow suit.
Much has been written, not least of all by this writer, about how Kory Clarke and Warrior Soul were among the most important artists to emerge in metal’s turn-of-the-Nineties rebirth, and that by rights they should also have stood alongside its biggest selling. No feeling of injustice, however keenly felt, can ever re-write history but, satisfyingly, this early project confirms that we were right all the time. For Warrior Soul fans past and present, it’s time to stand Trial.
