Work Of Art is what AOR music is all about! Have you ever dreamt of soaring melodies, heavenly hooklines and a musical technique to die for? Then these Swedish boys have it all for you! This band was put together for the first time in 1992 when Herman Furin and Robert Sall met while attending the SÖL school of music. However it took them about 15 years to convince singer Lars Sarfsund to come in to the project full time and devote his time and efforts to the amazing songs the two of them wrote during the years.

In January 2007 WOA released their first official demo which immediately caught the attention of critics and fans on the Melodic Rock scene. This soon led to a record deal with Frontiers Records who immediately picked up the band impressed with the quality of the songwriting and performing abilities. “Art Work” the band’s debut was released about one year after the band finished their demo, causing a huge buzz in the Melodic Rock audience, gathering some comments as “I´m really digging this record for an ultra smooth dose of traditional Westcoast / AOR” by Andrew J. McNeice of Melodicrock.com and “the best album of its type I´ve heard in years” by Phil Ashcroft of Fireworks Magazine.

Influences like TOTO, Journey and Giant can be easily recognized in their sound, but if the debut album “Artwork” could definitely show that the band was trying to find its way, the follow up “In Progress” shows three guys who have matured a lot their abilities and gel together in a very natural way.

“In Progress” gives the Melodic Rock fans all that they’re looking for with songs that stick in your ears from the first second and amazing musical licks. This is the record which everyone was waiting for and if the work’s now “In Progress” who knows what will happen when it will be finally done?

Tendo sido formada em 1998, na cidade de São Paulo, pelos amigos Alex Andreoni (guitarra) e Fernando Witcoske), a banda SANTAREM chega a seu terceiro álbum, este maravilhoso “No Place to Hide”, novamente lançado pela Die Hard Records (gravadora que sempre tem apoiado o metal nacional), sendo sucessor dos aclamados “Santarem” (2001) e “Downtown Station” (2004).

Em “No Place to Hide”, a banda nos apresenta dois novos integrantes, o baterista Agenor Vallone, e o vocalista Thiago Scataglia, que é um dos grandes destaques do álbum, e pode, desde já, ser considerado um dos melhores vocalistas do Brasil.

O estilo da banda, para quem não conhece, é um hard rock repleto de influências dos anos 70 e de rock progressivo, com pitadas de heavy metal tradicional. Mas neste novo lançamento, logo de cara podemos constatar que as músicas estão mais diretas do que outrora, o que deixou o som da banda ainda mais agradável. Não que seus dois álbuns anteriores sejam ruins, muito pelo contrário, são excelentes (principalmente o debut), mas em “No Place to Hide” a banda atingiu o ápice de sua criatividade musical, criando músicas muito cativantes. Ademais, conforme mencionado, o novo vocalista casou perfeitamente com a proposta da banda, acrescentando muito ao som do SANTAREM.
Alias, é impressionante como Thiago Scataglia se mostra a vontade na gravação, dando a impressão de que está na banda desde os seus primórdios. O vocalista consegue transmitir muito sentimento em suas interpretações, possuindo influências diretas de Michael Kiske e Geoff Tate, lembrando em algumas passagens Michele Luppi (ex-vocalista do Vision Divine) mas sem perder sua identidade própria. Aliado a isso, seguem os riffs e solos de guitarra sensacionais de Alex Andreoni, que mesclam peso e técnica na medida certa, com muita criatividade, além da cozinha precisa e técnica de Agenor Vallone (bateria) e Guilherme Furlan (baixo).
E o grande segredo para a excelente qualidade deste lançamento esta no fato de que a banda se concentrou unicamente na criação de grandes composições, sem cair nos meandros do exagero, sendo que tudo aqui esta na medida certa, e deverá agradar os ouvintes mais exigentes e cansados de bandas cujosmúsicos apenas visam demonstrar o quanto são bons em seus instrumentos.
Acerca do repertório do CD, após a apoteótica introdução “Escape”, a excelente “Leave it Out” já demonstra toda a qualidade do SANTAREM, com riffs cortantes e belas passagens vocais. Além dessa, se destacam a setentista “Faraway: Escape from the Haze”, mais cadenciada, e com solos belíssimos; “No Words to Say”, a melhor do disco, com riffs marcantes, vocais altíssimos, bateria correta e um baixo que mais parece um martelo batendo em nossos tímpanos; e a faixa título, com forte influência de rock progressivo. A faixa “Eternal”, regravação do primeiro disco da banda, também ficou muito boa.
A qualidade de gravação também é excelente, tendo sido o álbum produzido, mixado e masterizado por Ricardo Confessori (baterista do Angra e Shaman), que deixou o som do disco bem encorpado, sendo possível se perceber todos os detalhes das músicas.
Enfim, “No Place to Hide” é um trabalho digno de aplausos, e desde já pode ser considerado um dos grandes lançamentos de 2011, tanto em âmbito nacional, como internacional. Não percam.
