The Man Who Sold Himself is the third album from the collaboration between Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison and 05Ric, the multi-instrumentalist, singer and extended range bass player. The album will be released on Kscope on February 27th 2012 as a 2 disc set, featuring the album on CD as well as a 5.1 mix on DVD, allowing fans to enjoy the intricate complexities of the album in full surround glory.
In addition to being voted best Progressive Drummer four years in a row in the Modern Drummer Magazine’s readers poll. He was also recently invited to perform on the David Letterman show as part of his Drum Solo week (see below).
Best known for his work with Porcupine Tree, Gavin has also played extensively with King Crimson as well as providing session drumming for a host of respected artists but his work with 05Ric has allowed him to develop some of the work that he has created outside these projects.
05Ric uses his voice, extended range bass and guitars to turn his love of sound into sonic tapestries. His vocals, virtuoso playing and a chance meeting between the two has led to one of the most interesting and complex musical collaborations in recent years.
The union of 05Ric’s distinctive style with Gavin’s extraordinary drumming has already produced some unique results but Gavin has stated that with The Man Who Sold Himself, ‘we have continued to push the boundaries of our rhythmic and harmonic possibilities, I believe these are some of the wildest rhythmic concepts that I have ever conjured and 05Ric has snaked his bass around.’
05Ric goes on to explain that lyrically the album deals with themes “based on the greed of the financial global crisis, the empty shallowness of goal seeking without passion or for its own sake and the destructive force left behind by selfish behaviour – but the central character through heightened awareness and right action discovers his true calling.”
The album, which was written over the last two years and recorded in mid-2011, is the duo’s first release since Circles in 2009. Circles was described by Classic Rock Prog as ‘bristling with instrumental technique and firepower… it is peppered with a pulsating, muscular funk that pushes through generic barriers to create its own unique space.’

After months of rumors, Bruce Springsteen has finally announced the details of his 17th studio album. The disc is called Wrecking Ball and will hit shelves on March 6th. (Listen to a stream of the lead single “We Take Care Of Our Own” on Springsteen’s official website.) “Bruce has dug down as deep as he can to come up with this vision of modern life,” Springsteen’s manager Jon Landau said in a statement. “The lyrics tell a story you can’t hear anywhere else and the music is his most innovative of recent years. The writing is some of the best of his career and both veteran fans and those who are new to Bruce will find much to love on Wrecking Ball.”
Two of the songs have been performed on previous tours. Springsteen debuted the title track at Giants Stadium in the fall of 2009 and played it regularly throughout the rest of the Working on a Dream tour. “Land of Hope and Dreams” was first performed on the the E Street Band’s 1999 reunion tour. There are nine brand new songs on the album.
Wrecking Ball was produced by Ron Aniello – who has worked with Guster, Candlebox and Springsteen’s wife Patti Scialfa – alongside Springsteen and executive producer Jon Landau. It features a wide variety of players, including guitarist Tom Morello, former Pearl Jam drummer Matt Chamberlain and members of the E Street Band.
The album is a politically charged disc about the current state of America. Jon Landau tells Rolling Stone that the disc has “social overtones” and a “very pronounced spiritual dimension . . . It extends and deepens the vision that has animated all of Bruce’s work.”
A source told the Hollywood Reporter that the album has “unexpected textures – loops, electronic percussion . . . influences and rhythms from hip-hop to Irish folk rhythms.”
According to multiple sources, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will kick off a world tour in March. A complete tracklisting from the album is below, as well as a video of Springsteen and the E Street Band playing the title track at Giants Stadium in October 2009.

REALLY GOOD !
Whenever a heavy band does an acoustic album one of two things results. Either they just record acoustic arrangements of their existing songs, and either stick rigidly to the original structure or create something new and more delicate from them, or they completely mellow out and record wholly uncharacteristic tracks with softer vocals etc. Strangely, Hungarian Soulfly-clones Ektomorf have done neither of these things entirely. What they have done is rearrange five older songs, write five new ones, and top them off with covers of Johnny Cash‘s Folsom Prison Bluesand Lynyrd Skynyrd‘s Simple Man. Re-recording I Know Themsets the tone with a full on bass and drums assault that really does sound like a normal, heavy Ektomorf song with the guitars unplugged, even down to Zoltán Farkas’ growled vocals. I’m In Hate is a similar story (even if the chorus does sound like “I’m in heat”), while Redemption takes on an Alice In Chains feel mixed with Rammstein‘s Los. Stigmatized gets a softer treatment to begin with, but goes heavy in the second half, and Who Can I Trust is given a complete Spanish guitar overhaul. With the covers, Zoltán’s voice doesn’t quite suite either of them, and the decision to give the first minute of Folsom Prison Blues, which mostly sounds like Volbeat are playing it, the effect of an analogue radio with poor reception is strange, but overall at leastSimple Man is a great rendition. The real highlight appears amongst the new songs though. Be Free is actually a full-on heavy song much like the version of I Know Them, while ballads Again,Fate and Through Your Eyes are all a bit too alt-radio-rock, but To Smoulder is the kind of track the whole album should really have sounded like. Again much like an AIC acoustic song it’s dark and brooding without trying to be heavy and without being too “safe”. More like that, with some of the rearrangements and some slightly wiser choices of cover songs would have made this a superb record. Instead it’s only a slight-above-average one

Kscope is pleased to announce the release of Not The Weapon But The Hand, the new album from Steve Hogarth and Richard Barbieri. The album will be available from February 27th 2012.
Hogarth is best known as the frontman of Marillion, the progressive rock legends that he joined in 1989, following spells in The Europeans and How We Live. In addition to the 12 studio albumsMarillion have released in this time, he has also recorded and toured as a solo artist, under the moniker H.
In recent years Richard Barbieri has been a core member ofPorcupine Tree playing keyboards on all the band’s albums since 1993 as well as releasing two solo albums, Things Buried andStranger Inside. Prior to this, it was in the new-wave pioneers Japanthat he originally came to prominence, helping to create the groundbreaking synthesiser sound that defined the band and influenced the likes of The Human League, Duran Duran, Gary Numan, Talk Talk, Kate Bush and a whole raft of other artists, including Hogarth.
The band also influenced Hogarth, at that point playing keyboards in The Europeans; ‘when I was in my mid-twenties Japan’s ‘Tin Drum’ album was a firm favourite and truly a groundbreaking work… Japan were one of those rare bands where each musician seemed to have reinvented his instrument overnight. Central to this sound was the unmistakable synthesiser programming/playing of my, now, chum Mr B.’
