Jeff Lynne (ex-ELO) – Long Wave (2012)

Returning from a long winter’s nap is ELO mastermind Jeff Lynne. His newest album, Long Wave, to be released October 9th is a collection of songs, most predating the rock and roll era. Lynne was captivated by these tunes as a child and has put his own spin on them, making them a true blast from the past with ELO sprinkles on top! This album is a testament to Lynne’s musical genius. Who would ever think of making pop rock versions of “Love is a Many Splendored Thing” or “”Smile”?What makes this so wonderful is that is works – everything Jeff does works. And he did it all himself, he plays and sings everything.

NEM – Q 301.81(2012)

NOW!

Five years ago Dutch progressive rock band Nem-Q independently released their debut album, “Opportunities Of Tomorrow”. It showed a band in pursuit of the right direction. The guys knew how to handle their instruments, but their songs sounded a bit too flat and monotonous to hold my attention from start to finish. We’re now five years further and Nem-Q has just released a sophomore album, strangely called “301.81”. To cut a long story short: this concept album is certainly better, thanks to playing a lot of gigs and shaping their sound along the way. Released by RVPrecords and produced by newcomer Twan Bakker (who replaces Paul van Limbeek), “301.81” tells ‘the story of Adrian’s dreams, delusions, rise, aggressive outbursts and inevitable incarnation’. So, not only do these guys have an interesting story to tell, they also succeeded to pack it up in songs, that sound a lot more diverse than on their debut. Although the theme of the album is a bit heavy, the music is easy digestible and as such it could appeal to a wide audience. One to check Dout

Alan Reed – First in a Field of One (2012)

Alan Reed is a singer and musician from Glasgow. He is probably best known as the (former) singer with progressive rock band Pallas. He has also appeared on albums by Abel Ganz, Caamora, Neo, Parzival’s Eye and Strangers on a Train.”

“‘First in a Field of One’ is a unique collection of songs that provide the perfect setting for the unmistakeable timbre of Alan’s voice. The album embraces a number of musical flavours – through celtic folk, world music, and even jazz; – held together by strong song-writing and a passionate sense of identity.”
