Category: Hard Rock

Hard rock (or heavy rock) is a loosely defined subgenre of rock music which has its earliest roots in mid-1960s garage rock, blues rock and psychedelic rock. It is typified by a heavy use of aggressive vocals, distorted electric guitars, bass guitar, drums, and often accompanied with pianos and keyboards.

Randy Pevler – Directions (2011)

Pioneering hard rock guitar innovator Randy Pevler is no newcomer to the music scene and you can hear why on his 2011 CD Directions. Inspired by his freedom as an instrumental rock guitarist, Pevler, on Directions takes his sound in a number of different directions indeed, but he mostly sticks close to what he does best—the instrumental hard rock and progressive blues rock guitar genres. Track four, “Bluebeck” sounds like Jeff Beck jamming on a mid ‘70s John Lennon riff. A master of sonic diversity, Pevler takes his sound further out there into the realm of instro prog, while also occasionally adding in some spacy acoustic guitar moments. As if instinctively aware of the legacy of great guitarists before him, Pevler also manages to draw on the spirits of both Hendrix and 21st century guitar survivors Robin Trower and Peter Green. Both Hendrix and Trower fans will want to give a listen to another track highlight on Directions, “Two Hearts,” which also features some intriguing mellotron parts. Pairing his sizzling electric guitar work with the sound of dynamic drumming, Randy Pevler brings the hard rock instro sound well into the now. Pevler’s band is right there with him throughout theDirections album, which is topped off by a fine performance from Donny Sarian (drums, mellotron) with added support from a pair of bass players in Robby Pagliari and James LoMenzo. Thinking man’s metal with a progressive instrumental rock chaser, Randy Pevler’s Directions is the latest and perhaps greatest groundbreaking album from a continually evolving champion of the instrumental guitar world. www.RandyPevler.com

Vengeance – Crystal Eye (2012)

We did it again, ha ha ha ha,” that is how Vengeance’s 1987 classic Take It Or Leave It starts off. Although a lot has changed over the years since their breakthrough album Leon Goewie, the driving force of the band, has certainly managed to once again put Vengeance back on track after a difficult time. Having gone through a lot of musical ups and downs, personal issues, the sudden and untimely death of guitarist and friend Jan Somers last year, you might say they have reached an all time low.

So much to everyone’s surprise, a new era has kicked in and another gem Crystal Eye see’s the light of day. With new players, help from some old friends and a new record company, SPV, the future looks bright again for Vengeance. The album’s sensational all-star cast is just as spectacular as the new material. Alongside original vocalist Leon Goewie, Crystal Eye features drummer Chris Slade (ex-AC/DC), guitarist Keri Kelli (ex-Alice Cooper), and bassist Chris Glen (Michael Schenker Group). This line up is also known as Chris Slade’s AC/DC cover band Steel Circle that plays throughout Europe.

The material for Crystal Eye, Goewie composed mostly in collaboration with producer Michael Voss (Mad Max, ex Vengeance), except for the title track written by former Vengeance guitarist Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon, Star One). The CD consists of 11 straight forward, kick you in the face songs. They all have that quality of being melodic, good sing along songs, with strong choruses while keeping that crunchy edge, do to Kelli’s guitar playing. Kelli is also helped by Michael Voss and Timo Somers (Jan’s son and also ex-Vengeance).

Even after 30 years Goewie is still exploring and developing his vocal abilities as he already has a very unique recognizable voice. As he sings in a lower register on parts of “Back To The Bone” and also the beautiful ballad “Missing,” Gary Barden (MSG) comes to mind. The beautiful bluesy ballad “Promise Me” brings out the pain and more serious side of Vengeance. You have to strap on the seat belts for “Whole Lotta Metal,” a number which Tony Martin (ex-Black Sabbath) contributed tailor-made for Goewie and Vengeance, rocks you socks off.

The album closes with the instrumental, “Jan’s End Piece,” which features the last solo recordings of Jan Somers as a tribute to him. Jan will not be forgotten as the band use the old Vengeance logo as an arch between the past and the future. The only negative remark on the album is the title song “Crystal Eye,” although a great song, is a little out of place when compared to the rest of the album.

Big Trouble-The Very Best Of Big Trouble (2011)

Big Trouble
The Very Best of Big Trouble
DCM Records

By Al Kaufman

Back in the early ’90s, when hair was big and spandex was the attire of choice, four guys from Atlanta got together to start a band. Like most young kids at that time, they wanted to sound like Van Halen, Motley Crue, or something in-between. Big Trouble came pretty close. Songs like “No Stopping Now” offer up the attitude and humor that used to make people believe David Lee Roth was a talented man. Plus Mike Wilkes seemed pretty well acquainted with his wah-wah bar. Other stuff, such as “Now You See Me,” had more of a straight ahead, Ratt sound. And, of course, there had to be “Accidental Angel,” the obligatory ballad that would show off their sensitive side and make the girls want to sleep with them.

Big Trouble opened for the likes of, and shared gel and cosmetics with, Skid Row and Jackyl before they went their separate ways. Three of the four members, James Schmitt, Mike Wilkes, and Dan Call, went on with a couple of other guys to form The Villains (reviewed here), a southern country rock band that was recently signed by Warner Brothers. On the Big Trouble compilation the trio reunites with drummer Chuck Strawhand to record “Popcorn Whiskey, and Beer.” The song has more twang than power chords and, like many Villains songs, fondly reminisces about the good old days, yet still contains a hint of relief that 1) they made it through and 2) they don’t have to act that way anymore. Lyrically, the song is as trite as the title suggests, but the mood comes across.

Very Best goes on to include some live recordings, with the boys celebrating their testosterone, and ultimately covering Van Halen’s “Somebody Get Me a Doctor.” In listening to The Villains today, this is where they came from. It’s like looking back at early stand-up photos of Jon Stewart, or Mouseketeer shots of Britney Spears. Bassist Dan Call, whose DCM Records produced the release, said, “I didn’t want to go the rest of my life acting like the band never happened simply because of the genre we were in. Instead, I chose to celebrate it.” That’s what it feels like. So pop in a DVD of Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused, grab a few beers, and listen to some Big Trouble. Feel those horrible memories of high school yesteryear come flooding back.

UFO – Seven Deadly (2012)

Band:
Phil Mogg – vocals
Vinnie Moore – guitar
Paul Raymond – guitar and keyboards
Andy Parker – drums

Additional Musicians:
Lars Lehmann – bass

Production:
Produced and engineered by Tommy Newton.

Review:
On their last album Phil Mogg and company ratcheted things up a few notches — the result was the no frills 2009 album The Visitor. The latest UFO offering is entitled Seven Deadly, and features grotesque artwork that appears to have been created with Microsoft’s paint program — its cringe worthy.
Album cover aside the music found within Seven Deadly is a continuation of the foundation (of this incarnation of the band) laid with 2004’s You Are HerePhil Mogg isn’t an extraordinary singer by any means, but he does a magnificent job and is the right guy for UFOMogg remains the wily silver fox with the dry British sense of humor and the notebooks filled with clever lyrics — “Fight Night” is evidence of this.
On this, album number four of the Vinnie Moore era, UFO have delivered yet another astounding, solid, and melodic classic rock record. Once again Mooredisplays a great feel for what the songs need rather than laying down meaningless notes and riffs simply for the sake of doing so — he has also injected a bluesy feel to the albums that he’s played on, at the direction of Mogg. This is a great move that has given this version of the band its own identity.
The standout tracks on Seven Deadly include “Wonderland”, which has a great hook and a spectacular solo, and “Mojo Town”, with its memorable groove, great driving riff and verbose solo. Ballads have been a UFO strong suit over the years, with “Angel Station” and “Waving Goodbye” continuing that tradition.Seven Deadly also succeeds with “The Last Stoner Rider”, a great memorable mid-tempo track, and “Fight Night”, a rambunctious rocker that rivals “Hell Driver” from The Visitor.
In 2012, despite the departure of Pete Way due to health reasons — things are well in UFO land.
