Category: Hard Rock

Hard rock (or heavy rock) is a loosely defined subgenre of rock music which has its earliest roots in mid-1960s garage rock, blues rock and psychedelic rock. It is typified by a heavy use of aggressive vocals, distorted electric guitars, bass guitar, drums, and often accompanied with pianos and keyboards.

Shotgun Express – Gypsy Blues 2012

German rockers Shotgun Express have released a music video for the song “From The Gutter”, taken from the band’s upcoming album ‘Gypsy Blues’ which will be released on April 5th through Sound Guerilla Records/DA Music.

Founded in January 2009 by former Nasty Riot vocalist Diamond Flow, guitarists Johnny Cobra and Scott Damn, bassist Robin Robben and drummer Matt Lush, Shotgun Express offer an explosive mixture of hard, sleaze and punk rock. They’ll take you to a trip of no return from groovy riffs via blues-driven hard rock and dirty fast tunes through to heartbreaking ballads. By knowing how it is to be an outlaw, a social misfit or not fitting into the mainstream, their lyrics are all about tackling their Demons.

Shotgun Express delivers a highoctane live show (proved at shows with Rhino Bucket, CJ Ramone, Psychopunch and many more) featuring smashing drums, a pumping bass, screaming Marshall amps and a hyperactive screamer, while dressed up in tight Leather, knee-hole jeans plus a parfume somewhere between sweat and the smell of booze.

One of the most promising hard rock groups of the last time! Unusual female vocals gives the team a special charm, highly valued by critics! The staff of only two people had been recognized as one of the best newcomers to the hard rock scene. Material of the album is very energetic, powerful, impressive and memorable. At times, even aggressive, and very emotional during the whole disk.

Charm City Devils – Sins 2012

“I won’t stop, I’ll push through, in spite of you.” – John Allen

“It’s a long way to the top if you want to Rock and Roll” – Bon Scott

Charm City Devils (CCD) new albumSINS is 11 tracks of instantly catchy rock with a modern production that elevates the material while retaining the rawness of the guitars and vocals.

The writers of RUFKM have been rocking out to an advance streaming version of the album for a couple weeks now (courtesy of Amanda at ABC-PR) and are finally getting around to writing a review.

Perhaps you’ve heard of CCD.  The Baltimore based band had some nice exposure a few years ago when they were signed to Nikki Sixx’s Eleven Seven records, toured with Motley on Crue Fest in 2009, and named Best New Rock Band by iTunes that same year.  Their debut album was a straight up shot of classic rock and while frontman John Allen was a dead ringer for John Rzeznik, his vocals sounded like dead singer Bon Scott of AC/DC.  RUFKM subjected CCD to our famous “13 Stupid Questions”

Fast Forward to 2012.  While CCD is no longer on Eleven Seven records–presumably after Nikki realized John Allen wasn’t actually John Rzeznik — their album SINS drops tomorrow hot on the heels of their popular “Man of Constant Sorrow” cover.  CCD puts a unique rock twist on the folk song from the Coen Brother’s “O Brother Where Art Thou?” movie.  It has had solid airplay and an unofficial “lyrics video” of the track has had over 150,000 views on YouTube since it was posted in January.  The official and unofficial videos are posted below.  You’ll have to pick which one you like better.  One features Nosferatu and a bunch of words, the other has a hot blonde that knows how to work a shovel and scenes of forest joggers.  Full album review after the break.

Rush – Headlong Flight (Single) (2012)

Legendary rock band RUSH will herald the release of its new album,“Clockwork Angels”, with a new single, “Headlong Flight”, landing at rock radio on April 19.

‘Headlong Flight’ was one of those songs that was a joy to write and record from beginning to end,” frontman Geddy Lee tellsRollingStone.com. “Alex [Lifeson] and I had blast jamming in my home studio one day before the second leg of the Time Machine tour, and I did not revisit that jam until a year later. Alex and I assembled the song to be an instrumental and its original title was ‘Take That Lampshade Off Yo Head!”, but once we saw the lyrics Neil [Peart] had written, I knew that the spirit of the lyrics matched the instrumental perfectly and it was just a matter of making them fit and writing the melodies.”

RUSH‘s first new collection of original material in over five years and their first studio release via Anthem/Roadrunner Records“Clockwork Angels” will be released on June 12.

The recording of “Clockwork Angels” began in April 2010 with Grammy Award-winning producer Nick Raskulinecz (FOO FIGHTERSDEFTONES) — who also collaborated with the band on their last studio album, 2007’s“Snakes & Arrows”RUSH co-produced both records. The first two songs, “Caravan” and “BU2B”, were completed during that first session at Nashville’s Blackbird studios and performed nightly during the wildly successful Time Machine Tour, which ran from June 2010 to June 2011. Work on “Clockwork Angels” resumed in the fall of 2011 at Revolution Recording in Toronto after the tour’s finale, with additional strings (arranged by David Campbell) recorded at Hollywood’s Ocean Way Studios earlier this year. Lyrically, “Clockwork Angels” chronicles a young man’s quest across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy as he attempts to follow his dreams. The story features lost cities, pirates, anarchists, an exotic carnival, and a rigid Watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life. The novelization of“Clockwork Angels” is being written by science fiction writer Kevin J. Anderson in collaboration with RUSH drummer and lyricist Neil Peart.

TRIXTER – New Audio Machine (2012)

After 20 years since their last proper, full length studio release, TRIXTER has awakened with a new release entitled “New Audio Machine” and with all four original the members in the line-up.

Trixter caught their big break in 1990 after getting signed to a major label and immediately exploded into the spotlight with their commercial hair metal. Their second ablum ‘Hear’ was a much and rockier yet retaining a radio friendly sound.
With “New Audio Machine” the biggest difference between ‘then’ and ‘now’ is that now, Trixter has released a hard hittin’ American Hard Rock record which certainly gonna make a lot of heads spin.
Just listening to the opening verse of “Drag Me Down” is enough for most people to say ‘Huh? This is Trixter?’. Co-penned with former Styx guitar-slinger Glen Burtnik (who adds his own musical touches playing guitars as well), the song starts off with an almost southern-rock groove to it (ala Tesla) but when kicks in, it smacks you in the face like an anvil with a fierce guitar riff and an incredibly thick, rich arrangement. Great tune which is anything but your typical Trixter.
“Get On It” is similar in that heavier, more aggressive style featuring a sing-along chorus. On this track, I fully realize that Trixter has tapped into their gold selling past and made certain to make a song that resonates both relevancy and old school Hard Rockin’ glory.

With “Dirty Love” arrives, yes, your prototypical Trixter track. The guitar licks and rhythm are unmistakably Steve Brown just as the backing vocals in the chorus have that distinct flavor.
“Machine,” on the other hand, while still maintaining just a touch of the band’s nineties flair, is an aggressive, artery-bursting track which will surely get your blood pumping. There’s a thundering bass rhythm layered over Scott’s heavy percussion hits as the song begins right before Steve’s guitar comes screaming in and Loran’s vocals take over. Killer track, easily one of the best on the CD.
The semi-ballad “Live For The Day” packs a very positive and uplifting message and allows Pete’s amazing vocals to really take center stage for the first time. Beautifully done and the ever so subtle keyboards By Eric Ragno perfectly compliment the electric-acoustic driven melody giving the chorus that full, fat sound.
“Ride” finds the band once again returning to their roots as far as the overall hooks and grooves to the song but still it has a sharper, edgier side that true fans are gonna love.
“Physical Attraction,” is another up-tempo Trixter trademark rocker which will be sure to please all those die-hards fans.

“Tattoos & Misery” is the first single and video for the release and is easily the most commercially appealing with its potent, melodic chorus.
Now arrives my favorite piece of the album, the superb ballad “The Coolest Thing”. And it’s more than ‘cool’. The arrangement, the lyrics, the feel, the sound, everything about this song is sheer power ballad perfection right down to the final noe. Pete Loran gives the vocal performance of a lifetime so much that you can actually feel the emotion flow through you as the rest of the musicians on this track.
The album winds-up again with another audacious, uptempo number called “Save Your Soul”. The heavy guitar riff gives way to a nicely executed and almost anthem-like chorus on this one.
Then finally rounding off the release is “Walk With A Stranger” which was written way back in the late ’80s by SKID ROW’s Snake Sabo and Rachel Bolan. While is does have the slight Skid Row vibe, Trixter has made it genuinely their own.

If you are one of the few who doesn’t like Trixter’s nineties commercial albums and don’t want more, you will be terribly wrong letting pass “New Audio Machine”.
This new recording includes the best melodies of the past, yes, but also energetic and kickin’ American Hard Rock songs. A really well-rounded release which is a prime example of what you can accomplish by effectively blending musicianship and style with a mature approach to the music.
Production is good, just a bit unidimensional, but I think if you focus on the songs themselves you’ll have a more than a nice time listening to this new album while driving or partying out.
“New Audio Machine” will bury any misconceptions anyone has ever had about these guys once and for all. This is what American styled Hard Rock is all about.
It’s been 20 years but Trixter finally got it right, and for any hard rock, melodic rock, rockin’ AOR fan, “New Audio Machine” has more than its share of tasty tidbits and memorable moments.
Recommended.
