YNGWIE MALMSTEEN – Spellbound 2012

Acclaimed heavy metal singer Tim “Ripper” Owens (BEYOND FEAR, ex-JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH), who has been fronting Yngwie Malmsteen‘s band both live and in the studio since February 2008, does not appear on “Spellbound”.

Owens was unable to join Malmsteen at the Getaway Rock in July due to scheduling conflicts with Tim‘s official Ronnie James Dio tribute bandDIO DISCIPLES. Handling most of the lead vocals during Yngwie‘s set at the Getaway Rock Festival was bassist Ralph Ciavolino. (more…)

Their latest package contained three new discs and I listened to the first couple and they were fairly good but the last disc I popped in was from the Minnesota band DOWNTREAD. Captain Black Beard made it’s live debut on the 31st of October 2009 and has since been playing most of the clubs in Stockholm. At the end of 2010 the band decided to pick it up a notch and record a full length album. Having been in talks with the biggest rock producers in Sweden – Chips Kiesby (Sator, The Hellacopters), Tobias Lindell (Europe, Mustasch), Patrik Frisk (Takida, Corroded) – the band chose to work with David Castillo (Opeth, Katatonia) who had already shown himself capable when working on the bands single “Rock Is My Life”. SATAN JOKERS and SORTILEGE, two French cult metal groups of the 80’s, were pioneers of the genre in this country. We can’t help being thrilled at the union of these outstanding musicians, led by Renaud HANTSON at the drums and as producer and Christian “Zouille” AUGUSTIN as lead singer.
Together, they revisit eight titles of SORTILEGE, in more modern, « straight » versions, without fiorituras or useless effects which would have spoiled the essentials, that is to say Zouille’s voice, in all its richness. Hantson has voluntarily withdrawn from the lead vocals, to focus on his drums playing, which remains as efficient as ever.
