The title track, in particular, with its Iron Maiden-ish midsection, delivered instant metallic gratification, and the eight-minute epic ,,Dreamscape” introduced numerous new tricks (tribal rhythms, surprisingly restrained guitar textures) that merely hinted at the band’s potential prog prospects.

The album starts with the poetic ,,Beginning”, a speaking part that preludes ,,Lucifer’s Hammer”, one of the band’s strongest songs. The guitar attacks with a melodic fury, leaving the drums, bass, and soaring vocals to finish you off.

Fronted by Michael Des Barres, Detective featured Michael Monarch on guitars, Tony Kaye on keyboards, Bobby Pickett on bass and Jon Hyde on drums. No slouches, after signing to Swan Song, they released both of their only two LPs in 1977.

MONSTERS OF ROCK – THE 1991 RUSSIAN BROADCAST The recording featured on this CD captures Metallica s performance at Monsters Of Rock at Tushino Airfield, Moscow, Russia on 21st September 1991, where the band played a blistering set in support of their eponymous Black album, performing a rich selection from the new record along with classic oldies and a few covers thrown in for good measure.
