SATIN – It’s About Time [Japan Edition +2 bonus] (2018), MP3+FLAC
Awarded as Breakthrough Artist 2017 by plotn08 team, Norwegian singer, songwriter and producer SATIN got released his two first albums in Japan in 2018, each with 2 bonus tracks. Both Japanese Edition are out of print now, as the record label ceased operations.
Additionally to the awesome new tracks / bonuses, Satin’s self-titled debut “Satin” originally appeared 2014, for this Japanese release has been remastered to polish things a little.
And we have more, an unreleased track from the sessions sent to us by Satin aka Tommy Nilsen himself.
Satin owns a truly melodious vocal register, sometimes a little raspy on the mellower songs, all sung in perfect English. All these songs could have been hits 30 years ago, very well recorded and produced with a crisp sound.
Recorded by Satin himself in his own studio, the music was mastered at the legendary Sterling Sound in New York by Grammy Award Winning senior mastering-engineer Tom Coyne (U2, Def Leppard, Michael Jackson).
You will love the heavenly keyboard filled AOR / Melodic Rock songs such as the wonderful opener “Fire The Shot” (check the video), the soaring “I Want Us”, the extremely catchy “Part Of It” or the harmony-gold midtempo “Life Will Never Slow Down”.
Tom Satin is not afraid to harden his sound on the melodic hard rockers “Some People Call It Love”, the stomping “Leave It Be” and “I’ve Been Crazy”, which reminds me Freddy Curci’s Alias.
A classy late ’80s album needs ballads, and we find two quality numbers here: the terrific and beautifully orchestrated “Don’t Know The Words” (there’s a video in the making), and the intense and emotional “I Don’t Need Anybody”.
And now get into the juicy Japanese edition bonus tracks.
The more I listen to “If You’re Walking Away” the more I like it. Midtempo AOR with clean guitars, synths galore, melodious verses and an anthemic chorus to die for. Is this taken from an unreleased 1984 album? Not at all folks, this is Tom Satin bringing these classy, immortal melodies to this new Century.
Oh man, and then comes “Back Before I Go”… what a wonderful sweet melody. Take as reference Bon Jovi’s first album yet much more radio-friendly. Again, those lovely synths surround another chorus to die for.
But wait, there’s more: “I Want Us” is an unreleased song, featured here in its demo form but sound quality is A+. And musically, be prepared for another slice of classy American influenced AOR / Melodic Rock.
I can’t recommend you Satin’s music enough. Both his albums are must haves for true fans of the genre, and this Japanese Edition worth every penny, believe me.
