Color Three – Paint By Number (2013)
Gary Pihl, Kimberley Dahme and Jeff Neal met as members of the band Boston and the three of them were asked to perform at a charity benefit. Color Three was born from that opportunity to help others, and to write, record and perform for charitable causes.
This album of 13 songs sounds more like early Pretenders with Kimberley’s rich contralto on most of the lead vocals rather than a Boston album. Sparse and raw with just one guitar, bass and drums, Paint By Number tells stories of hope and deliverance as told by those who have been there and back. There are no guitar solos on this record, it’s just as the band performs, three instruments and three part vocal harmonies.
“We’ve all suffered through some bad times but at this point in our lives, we feel that the positive outweighs the negative. If our songs can help to lift someone else’s spirits, then we’ve done our job. Besides the songs we’ve written with the three of us, we had the good fortune to write with some platinum selling songwriters on this CD. As noted on the back of the CD, we wrote a couple of songs each with Kelly Keagy (Night Ranger), Mark Slaughter (Slaughter), David Lauser and Robert Berry (Sammy Hagar Band) and alternative country artist Anthony Smith,” explains Color Three.
